Camping with the Beer Can Cook Pot & Stove is a great way for kids and new campers to learn backpacking cooking skills.
When a group goes backpacking using the Beer Can" Cook Pot & Stove, everyone carries their own cook pot food, and fuel. At meal time, everyone cooks, each with their own stove. Meals become a festive potluck affair with people sharing different dishes that they each independently planned and prepared.
The advantage of backpacking this way is that everyone gets to learn and practice all of the camping skills of planning and preparing food.
Each person gets to plan the food they will eat. (You can learn about the Ultralight Outfitters food planning system in the Food & Cooking section.) Each person gets to go shopping for the food they have selected. Each person gets to carry their snacks, and eat them when they want. Each person gets to cook their own meals.
When you take a new group of people backpacking, you can start the trip with a meeting and teach the new people how to plan their meals. Then, take the group on a shopping trip and help everyone buy their own the food.
The result of this kind of food planning and preparation is that everyone in the group gets exactly the food that they want. They also learn a complete set of backpacking food skills. This builds competence, confidence, independence and self-esteem.
